Recovering badly exposed pictures - Shadows and highlights
This option is available in Photoshop
as shadows/highlights
or under another form with D-light in Nikon software packages
Shadow/highlight: very efficient tool to
“save” badly exposed pictures. Much better results
than playing with light
and contrast. Highlight darker parts then adjust highlights to get a
good balance. Drawbacks: gives a kind of pastel color and generates some
artifacts at the border between contrasting colors.

A badly exposed picture with some post-processing can
become an attractive image. The result is a kind of painted landscape.
