There are basically two main directions: working with permanent light sources (spots) or with strobes (flashes). Spots are usually used for product photography and strobes for portrait or people but that's not an absolute rule.
Basically, to have full flexibility, you can buy one of the kits you can easily find on the market.
They typically include 2 to 3 tripods to mount lamps or strobes, the lamps, reflectors or strobes and specific items like umbrellas, reflectors, soft boxes.
If you are equipped with that kind of stuff, the rest is basically about learning how to use the different options... my advice: read a lot on the internet (thousands of people showing their studio configurations, the particular setup and the resulting pictures).
Then practice, practice, practice...
