This might be a simple and stupid one... and I don't remember seeing this in the user's manual. While I was hiking during one of my recent trips, I probably hit the back of my camera and lost the protective screen on my LCD... I was in Canada, in the middle of nowhere, and I didn't want to scratch the LCD screen. I found a temporary solution by putting a piece of transparent tape on it and a few days later I came back to civilization and bought a new screen for about 20CDN (15 USD or 13 EUR). I just realized there was an easy way to prevent this: maybe you noticed (I didn't) but there is a very small hole in those screens. You can just use a piece of cord, wire, whatever you find, to attach the screen to a fixed part of the body, so that you don't risk losing it anymore. Based on my personal experience, I would say, the chance of losing it, is bigger on the D70 (saw quite a few camera's since then without one) than on the D200 (better attached).
This is the simple DIY solution I would suggest for cameras like the D70, D80, D200 and now D300 or even pro cameras.
Note that cheaper Nikon camera's like the D50 and D40 are not delivered with an LCD cover. The backup solution I applied (putting a transparent film on the LCD screen) is a highly recommended solution to avoid scratches.
On the even newer D3 camera, there is no screen protection foreseen because the glass is tempered. The screen is thus scratch resistant. In practice, I still recommend to put a protection on the screen.
See for example how it looks on the D3.
