The ultimate dream kit would consist of the following (as far as I am concerned) - budget is not an issue here. (I am talking about Nikon stuff here, Canon users have their equivalent kit, of course)
Main body: D3
Backup body: a second D3 (FX) or a D300 (DX) and why not a D40x (DX) when a very light kit is needed
used to be:Main body: D2Xs
Backup body: D2Xs or D200 or D2Hs
Lenses:
DX or FX is mentioned for crop sensor or full frame sensor.
- 14-24 2.8 - the full frame wide angle - FX or DX
- 24-70 2.8 - the new top notch reference - replacing the beast (28-70) - FX or DX
- 10.5 fisheye - just for the fun - DX
- 12-24 - because you need to go wide - DX
- 17-55 2.8 - standard walk-around lens - DX
- 28-70 2.8 - the portrait lens also called the beast
- 70-200 2.8 VR - medium zoom - top notch for sport - short distance
- 200-400 4 VR - the ultimate birding zoom
- 105 2.8 VR - for macro work and/or portrait
- add a 200 2 VR or 300 2.8 VR or 600mm depending on your priorities
- an 85 1.4 or 105 2 DC could also be good choices if you are into primes
- a few copies of the SB-800
- all the usual accessories and an assistant to carry everything and you're all set
- of course you can add a full studio configuration (strobes, umbrellas, soft-boxes, backgrounds, and more and more...)
